What is Counselling

Difference between Counselling & Psychotherapy

Sometimes life can be difficult, it can be unmanageable and challenging. Counselling can be a great support or resource at times of crisis or difficulty in our lives. Counselling involves meeting with a trained professional therapist in a safe, confidential setting allowing you to talk about and explore life’s challenges in a non-judgemental space.

Counsellors and Psychotherapists are trained to work closely with clients to enable them to explore thoughts, beliefs, feelings and behaviours that affect their life negatively. Through counselling and psychotherapy you are given the support and safety to explore, understand and often change these thoughts, beliefs, feelings and behaviours.

WHAT IS PSYCHOTHERAPY

The main objective of psychotherapy is to help us gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. It is primarily exploring the unconscious, allowing insights into the conscious. Psychotherapy can help us explore feelings and thoughts we have about ourselves and other people, particularly family and those close to us. Psychotherapy encourages us to look at how our experiences has impacted on us and how unconsciously we have learnt to survive through these experiences and developed strategies to cope. These strategies become unconscious behaviours, leading to unknown struggles as to why we find certain situations, emotions, people and behaviours difficult to deal with exploring the unconscious, allowing insights into the conscious. With a therapist you can explore and discover more resourceful ways of managing your life. The relationship is one of respect and non-judgement between you and your therapist and sessions usually last for one hour.

Counselling deals with more immediate or crisis issues such as relationship break-up, bereavement, stress or work issues. Psychotherapy looks at deeper more long-term issues that may have their roots in our past, for example, abuse issues, trauma in childhood which are affecting our present life. Frequently counselling and psychotherapy overlap and are used interchangeably.

COUNSELLING

Tragedies and challenges happen and life may feel out of your control, but each of us have ultimate control over our preparations and responses on dealing with what life sends our way.  Counselling during these times can be quite helpful in providing both the support and skills to better address these life challenges. Ultimately, it is an invaluable investment in your emotional, physical and mental health, an act of courage and a gift to those whose lives you touch.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Some people come to therapy for help with a particular issue such as relationship difficulties, low self esteem, anxiety, depression, to build confidence, loss & bereavement or recovery from abuse/trauma. Others find therapy useful for gaining a perspective on the past, to help make better decisions in the present and to open up more possibilities for the future.

Some people seek out counselling due to the loss of a loved one through death, divorce or relationship breakup. This is possibly the hardest time and one that causes the most stress. To go through it alone could increase the pain. A Counsellor can help you to make sense of it all. Having a place of safety where feelings can be felt and talked about with ease is so important at this time.
